Ali Versus Foreman - Zaire
It was a wet, windy night a bit like boxing in a washing machine. Muhammad, who was fighting for the heavyweight boxing crown was playing up to the crowd. He and his opponent were American, but it was Ali who seemed most at home.
On the other side of the ring, George Foreman sits confidently, ready to defend his title. The champion looked cool and as large as a fridge freezer.
The fight began, and it was explosive, Ali tried and failed to knock the champ out. These are highly insulting to a professional boxer, and did nothing but infuriate George.
Thrown into a torrent of fury, Foreman had Ali on the ropes, repeatedly punishing him. A lot of people in the crowd and the commentary box thought it was the end for Ali. And some were genuinely concerned about his health.
Between punches Ali would let of a flurry of jabs and continue playing to the crowd! He was still leaning right back on the rope and taking huge body shots. This as the weather was closing in.
Then we came to the 7th round, big George was looking very tired. His punches we being to become less powerful, slower and less impactful on Ali. It was then that Ali said his famous line "This is wrong place to get tired" and in the 8th round Ali felled Foreman with that famous knockout.
Feeling that Foreman's power was gone Ali decided the time was now. Ali hit him with a flurry of punches before a straight right felled Foreman. Whether it was exhaustion and the punch that kept him down is up for debate. He had regained the belt taken from him by the US government.
Just as the bout has ended the storms arrived and the heavens opened. And as it rained it seemed to have enough water to fill dozans of washing machines. Muhammad Ali was now 2 time champion.
